The Villages in Florida is a beautiful retirement community in central Florida. This master-planned age-restricted community is located mainly in Sumter County. The community is controlled by several Community Development Districts, most of which are controlled by H. Gary Morse, the owner of the development company which created The Villages.
The Villages is located approximately 20 miles south of Ocala and approximately 45 miles northwest of Orlando. The Villages was awarded the No. 1 ranking as the fastest growing micropolitan area in the United States according to the 2008 Census Bureau report. It covers over 30 square miles which is over 20,00 acres.
The town is full of activities and entertainment for residents and visitors alike. They offer many programs that are change frequently with resident’s interest and participation. There is something for everyone in The Villages, from golf and swimming to nightly entertainment.
The Villages dedicated recreation department creates monthly calendars that are posted to The Villages website. There are so many recreational programs for residents to enjoy like drama lessons, arts and crafts, dance classes, fitness trails, and numerous sports teams. There are many recreational facilities to enjoy as well, including dog parks, sports clubs, shuffleboard courts, and horseshoe pits. The town has an amazing woodworking shop for woodworkers and there is also occasionally polo matches that draws spectators.
Golf courses are plentiful at The Villages. There are 28 executive golf courses and nine country clubs and championship courses for both residents and visitors to enjoy. Residents play for free on any of the executive courses and are offered complimentary memberships at all nine of the country clubs. If you don’t know how to play golf, no problem, the town’s golf academy provides lessons to beginners and those looking to improve their skills.
Swimming is a popular pastime at The Villages. Residents and their guests can enjoy a dip at any of the three types of pool located throughout the community. For a quiet, adults only pool, residents can visit their neighborhood pool. Family pools welcome children and all visitors. For lap swimming, exercise classes and water sports, The Villages offers sports designed pools.
For entertainment, The Villages two town squares offer live entertainment every night of the year between 5 and 9 p.m. the towns website lists the upcoming events. There is also an assortment of special events for residents and guests including political meet and greets, car shows, train expo, a health expo, holiday parades and celebrations, and arts and crafts.
The Villages is also home to two movie theaters and a variety of shopping and restaurants. There are actually over 60 restaurants located in The Villages with everything from fine dining to casual, like Chicken Salad Chick which boasts the best chicken salad you’ll find anywhere. For a great view and some delicious seafood there is Hemingway’s At Havana.
The town has a Lifelong Learning College which gives residents the opportunity to learn in courses of interest.
